Montpelier Plantation Inn, Nevis

St. Kitts is the larger, more accessible island.  There are many more people and activities, as well as a greater variety of bars, restaurants, and beaches.  However, Nevis is the more secluded, quiet, and peaceful retreat.  The islands are truly complementary.

Although we stay on St. Kitts, we always venture to Nevis for a day trip.  This December, we had the opportunity to tour a place Lora has always wanted to stay:  Montpelier Plantation Inn .  The Inn is truly magical.  It is a short drive from Charlestown (Nevis’ capital), but worlds away from the hustle and bustle of life.  Montpelier Plantation Inn is nestled beside Nevis Botanical Gardens and in the shadow of Nevis Peak.  When you step onto the grounds, you immediately feel at peace.  Everything is immaculate and pristine but not pretentious nor stuffy.

Kakia Michou was our guide for the beautiful afternoon tour of the Inn that has received top accolades from several travel publications.  Montpelier Plantation Inn is a family-run boutique hotel that has a total of 18 rooms.  In fact, during our tour we met Muffin Hoffman, the matriarch of the family.  The property is built upon one of Nevis’ original sugar plantations.  One of the most spectacular buildings is a 300 year old sugar mill that has been converted into a stunning restaurant. The Inn seamlessly combines old world charm with clean, modern lines.  One of the most impressive sights to be had was in the poolside lounge that has the look and feel of a New York City rooftop bar.  From this hip area, you can see the immaculate pool and the beautiful, serene landscaping surrounding the sugar mill.  Montpelier Plantation Inn effortlessly blends old with new and where modern meets traditional.   Sadly, our visit to the hotel was only a small glimpse into what this property offers its’ lucky guests.  The next time we are in Nevis, we hope to return to the Inn for a few days to decompress and truly experience everything this fabulous property has to offer!
