One of the main reasons we chose to visit Austin for our birthday celebrations was to satiate the foodie within us. Tom has dined at Uchi before and was excited to share one of his favorite Japanese restaurants with Lora.
Uchi is a Japanese restaurant spearheaded by Tyson Cole, the 2011 James Beard Foundation Award recipient for Best Chef: Southwest . Executive chef Cole serves food that features incredible marrying of different flavors with unique and fresh ingredients. The majority of the dishes are small, encouraging diners to share a variety of small bites with each other. The main menu shines, however, be sure to look at the daily specials. Each day, the menu reflects the best seasonal food items available. Be warned, if you have later reservations, items may be sold out.
If you get a chance, do yourself a favor and request a seat at the sushi bar. You will be assigned your own sushi chef and it will give them an opportunity to guide you to interesting menu selections. The food was amazingly fresh and flavorful. In addition to excellent food, Uchi has a nice selection of sake. Our sushi chef helped us select a delightful unfiltered sake to accompany our meal. At the end of the evening (we closed the place down!) we were presented with a complementary birthday treat. We enjoyed our experience so much that we returned the following night for an encore meal. Uchi is a truly fantastic dining destination. It truly is a one of a kind Japanese restaurant. If possible, secure a reservation. Otherwise, show up near closing time and see if you can be accommodated. This is a definite stop for Japanese food lovers and foodies in Austin!
